Hurricane Food Preparation

Proper preparation is the best possible course of action when threatened by a hurricane. One of the most important things you can do when preparing for a hurricane is to ensure that you have a full supply of food and water. In the aftermath of a hurricane, it is possible that you can find yourself without electricity. This affects your access to refrigeration and cooking appliances. Prepare for this possibility by stocking up on non-perishable food sources.
Non-perishable foods
The best course of action to prepare for a hurricane is to stock up on non-perishable food sources early, well before a hurricane is imminent. When a hurricane is on the horizon, it is likely that many hurricane preparedness supplies are depleted. Since you do not know if you will have power after a hurricane, it is best to stock up on single-meal servings of non-perishables. Items that are good to have in supply are: canned goods like soups and vegetables, bottled water, cereal, crackers, granola bars, nuts, peanut butter and canned tuna. Another good idea is to have single-serving condiment packets available as they do not need refrigeration.
Cooking supplies
To use the food you already have in your refrigerator after a hurricane, it is a good idea to have food preparation equipment on hand. If you own a charcoal grill, get plenty of charcoal and lighter fluid. If you have a propane grill, buy a few extra propane tanks. If you are located in a high-probability hurricane area, it is a good idea to invest in a camp stove. Also, keep a sufficient amount of paper plates, paper towels, napkins, cups and utensils on hand.
The most important thing when a hurricane is looming is preparation. Having the correct hurricane supplies is vital. Ensure you are prepared by acquiring a variety of non-perishable food and bottled water well before a hurricane strikes.
