How Adults Can Help the Whole Family Prepare for Hurricanes

Finding yourself in the midst of a hurricane is scary and daunting, especially when you have a family to look after. Luckily, there are several steps you can take to reduce the chances of property damage or personal injury.

Board up the windows

Gale force winds and torrential downpour can wreak havoc on a house. Structurally, the weakest parts of any home are the windows. Glass is much less stable than wood or brick. Debris that is carried by the wind can easily shatter a window, and open your home up to the elements. Not only does the threat of water damage exist, but your air conditioning system is not as effective when there is such a breach. Boarding up your windows with a sheet of plywood is a highly recommended idea.

Get to the low ground

Even if every safety precaution is taken to protect your home, the threat of debris is still real and palpable. The best place to dwell during a violent storm is the basement, because you are much more protected from the weather underground. As such, if things start to worsen, the best course of action is to relocate to the basement.

The loss of power

As trees fall and damage power lines, the threat of losing electricity to your home is very real. That is why it is always a good idea to have a stock of food that you can prepare in the absence of power. It is typically a bad idea to stock up on frozen food before a hurricane, because without energy to your refrigerator and freezer, your purchases could spoil. Likewise, there is no way to prepare most frozen food without an oven or microwave.

You can rest easy once you have made the proper accommodations, and taken the necessary safety precautions for a hurricane. The best course of action at this point is to remain inside the home and refrain from venturing outdoors.
